New Standard Introduced for Harmful Substances in Architectural Coatings
30. October 2025China has officially released a new national standard for architectural coatings, titled GB 30981.1-2025: Limit of Harmful Substances of Coatings – Part 1: Architectural Coatings. This new regulation replaces the previous version, GB 18582-2020, and will take effect starting June 1, 2026. The updated standard outlines revised limits and testing methods for harmful substances in architectural coatings, aligning with the country’s ongoing efforts to strengthen environmental and health protections in the construction sector. Architectural coatings typically require China Compulsory Certification (CCC) in order to be approved for import and sale in China.

The CCC mark is a mandatory safety and quality certification system regulated by Chinese authorities for a wide range of products, including coatings used in construction. Its purpose is to ensure that products meet China’s safety, environmental, and quality requirements before they are allowed in the domestic market. Manufacturers and exporters must ensure their products comply with the latest applicable GB standards, such as the newly announced GB 30981.1-2025, to obtain CCC approval.
