CCC: New GB Standard for Toys Published

The Chinese authorities are always looking for ways to improve the safety of children’s toys. On May 6, 2014 the “Standardization Administration of China” (SAC, Chinese: 国家 标准化 管理 委员会) issued GB Standard 6675-2014, which will replace the current GB-standard 6675-2003 (National Safety Technical Code for Toys) and will become effective on January 1, 2016.
Boy Playing with AbacusSome important changes to the new GB standards include:

 

  • GB 6675.1-2014 – Basic Code – Toy Safety
    In this first section, the general safety requirements for toys are specified. The prohibited substances were extended to include known toxic substances such as phthalates (plasticizers), specific coatings, etc.
  • GB 6675.2-2014 – Mechanical and Physical Properties
    In this section additional requirements of magnets and magnetic toys were established as well as strengthening the acoustics guidelines for children’s toys.
  • GB 6675.3-2014 Flammability
    Updated safety requirements include newly prohibited materials and new test methods for soft toys, costumes, toys that are worn on the head or designed to be worn by a child.
  • GB 6675.4-2014 – Migration of certain elements
    Some requirements of ISO 8124-3:2010 have been adopted with minor changes.
