Chinas Great Wall interested in acquiring Fiat Chrysler
According to a company official, Great Wall Motor company, China’s largest SUV and pickup manufacturer, has expressed a strong interest in purchasing Fiat Chrysler Automotive (FCA).
The company official confirmed this announcement in Automotive News, a reputable US publication. This announcement has notably triggered a sharp jump in shares.
According to Sergio Marchionne, a chief-executive from Fiat Chrysler; the company is actively seeking partners to help in several areas of expansion, including: assistance with managing rising costs, help to comply with new emission regulations and most significantly – develop innovative technology for electric and self-driving cars.
Whilst there remains some uncertainty as to whether Great Wall intends to purchase all, a majority or part of FCA. Such a massive acquisition and partnership with one of the largest Chinese SUV and pickup automaker’s, would be a massive step in fulfilling Great Wall’s desire to become the largest SUV maker in the world.
The current state of the deal is still very much in its infancy. Yet Great Wall has confirmed that this deal has been in the works for quite some time, though Marchionne has declined to comment on the precise stage of the deal.
There also remains the possibility that segments of the company could be sold, such as Jeep. This could trigger further interest from other car giants such as Volkswagen and General Motors.
