China Will Take the Lead in the Electric Vehicles Market

During a visit from President Xi Jinping, German car manufacturer, Daimler, announced that it will be taking further strides with its electric car initiative in China.

Along with their partner, BAIC, Daimler is investing an estimated €655 million (¥5 Billion) into manufacturing an electric battery plant in Beijing, with plans for the first electric cars to launch from as early as 2020.

This new Chinese battery factory will be a component of Daimler’s global battery production network, which the company has pledged to invest €1 billion. This battery production network includes the Kamenz factory in the Saxony district, where construction of a second factory is already underway, with an expected cost of €500 million.

work at big car factory industry

To boost production for when the Beijing factory opens, during the construction phase, Daimler will be sending experienced workers from the Kamenez factory to Beijing to help with training. Significantly, these new battery cells will come out of Beijing directly.

According to Daimler’s CEO, Daimler sees China’s push for green self-sustainability as highly attractive for green technology, and given that China is the largest car market in the world, it makes sense that German car manufacturers make a more sustained push in the region, whilst supporting China’s dynamism in electromobility.

Under the brand ‘EQ’ Mercedes also plans on launching 10 fully electric vehicles (based on the traditional C-Class, E-Class and S-Class series) in China, from 2019; and expect sales to be very high.

Moreover, Mercedes has had an active assembly plant in China since 2005. They also have an engine production facility in Beijing – Mercedes’ largest production plant in the world; another clear indication of China’s future sustainability as a green energy and electromobility juggernaut.

The strategic cooperation between Daimler and BAIC is reflected in Daimler’s stake in the BAIC subsidiary, Beijing Electric Co. Ltd (BJEV)
