India Certification
Product Certification for the Indian Market
What is often called the “India Certification” actually is a set of certifications that importers and manufacturers need to obtain depending on which industry they are in (AIS for Automotive, BIS for electrical equipment, WPC for Wireless & Radio, and TEC for telecommunication and IT). Similar to China’s Certifications (CCC, SRRC, etc), it is India’s answer to growing concerns over human safety and a first step in adopting international standards of quality. As a result, companies who manufactured products in the above mentioned industries and want to do business in India must comply with the applicable regulations and obtain the necessary certification.
The standards have been developed and announced independently from each other in India over the last 30 years. There are different authorities responsible for different types of certification and different test laboratories authorized based on specific types of products. Applicable standards and regulations change frequently along with the documentation requirements to complete the applications.
As part of the certification process, typically all products testing will need to be completed in India by an approved test lab. In some cases you will need to have Indian auditors from the certification authority visit and inspect your plant. In other cases you will also need to have a representative in India.
Please note that different from many other global standards, the Indian certification pertains mostly not to specific models or model families, but to all similar products manufactured by an individual factory. What is specifically needed for your factory depends on a range of different factors such as primary intent of the end use of the product, method of shipment and/or to simply requiring a ruling from the certification body.
Even if a product is exempt from certification, it is still necessary to have all documentation correct and complete to prove your product is exempt to customs.
