China Publishes New Motorcycle Emissions and Noise Standards
9. July 2026China has published two new mandatory national standards that will update the country’s regulatory framework for motorcycle environmental performance. GB 14622-2026, Limits and Measurement Methods for Emissions from Motorcycles (CHINA V), and GB 4569-2026, Limits and Measurement Methods for Noise Emitted by Motorcycles (CHINA III), were both released on 27 February 2026 and are scheduled to enter into force on 1 January 2029. Together, the standards introduce revised technical requirements for pollutant emissions and vehicle noise, providing manufacturers with a transition period to prepare for compliance. Motorcycles usually require CCC certification in order to be approved for import and sale in China.
Updated Environmental Requirements for Motorcycles
The new standards were issued under the responsibility of China’s Ministry of Ecology and Environment as part of the country’s ongoing efforts to modernize environmental regulations for road vehicles.
GB 14622-2026 establishes the fifth-stage national framework for motorcycle pollutant emissions, replacing both GB 14622-2016 and GB 18176-2016, which currently govern emissions from motorcycles and mopeds. The revised standard updates pollutant emission limits and measurement methods, reflecting China’s continued efforts to reduce vehicle emissions and improve environmental performance.
At the same time, GB 4569-2026 replaces GB 4569-2005 and GB 16169-2005, introducing the third-stage national framework for motorcycle noise. The updated standard consolidates previous requirements for stationary and acceleration noise into a single document, establishing revised noise limits and measurement methods that manufacturers must follow when demonstrating compliance.
Both standards were developed with the participation of leading Chinese research institutes, testing organizations, and technical experts, highlighting the broad industry involvement in updating the country’s motorcycle regulatory framework.
Compliance Implications for Manufacturers
With both standards taking effect on 1 January 2029, manufacturers, importers, and exporters have several years to assess the impact on product development, testing programs, and regulatory compliance strategies. Companies supplying motorcycles to the Chinese market should review future vehicle designs, validation procedures, and technical documentation to ensure alignment with the revised emission and noise requirements before the implementation date.
The publication of GB 14622-2026 and GB 4569-2026 represents a coordinated update of China’s motorcycle environmental regulations, replacing standards that have been in force for many years. Businesses planning to place motorcycles on the Chinese market should monitor future implementation guidance and begin preparing for the new requirements well ahead of the enforcement date.
