China GB 48001-2026: Mandatory Standard for Automotive Door Handles
24. September 2026This article is an update to our 4 June 2026 news item “China publishes new safety standard for vehicle door handles” and summarises the current status of GB 48001-2026 as well as the concrete implications for manufacturers, importers and suppliers.
China has released a new mandatory national standard for automotive door handles, GB 48001-2026, marking a further tightening of safety requirements for vehicle body components. The standard, titled “Safety technical requirements for automotive door handle,” was published on 28 January 2026 and enters into force on 1 January 2027. It is registered as a safety standard under plan number 20254321-Q-339, with the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) as the governing department. Technical responsibility has been delegated to TC114SC17, the Body Accessories Subcommittee of the National Technical Committee of Auto Standardization. Automotive door handles usually require CCC certification in order to be approved for import and sale in China.

Scope and drafting of the new standard
GB 48001-2026 carries the Chinese classification code T26 and the international classification code 43.040.60, placing it within the wider framework of vehicle body and accessory safety regulation. The drafting group reflects the full supply chain: it includes the China Automotive Technology and Research Center (CATARC), domestic manufacturers such as Geely, Li Auto, Xiaomi Auto, BYD, SAIC, Dongfeng, Chery, NIO and Changan, and international groups including Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, BMW Brilliance, Ford, Honda, Nissan, Toyota, Porsche and Ferrari. Component and safety-system suppliers, testing and certification bodies, and research institutes also took part. The standard’s status is currently listed as “about to be implemented,” and an official interpretation course has been published alongside it.
Implications for manufacturers and market access
For manufacturers, importers and exporters, the effective date of 1 January 2027 sets the practical compliance deadline. Products placed on the Chinese market after that date will need to demonstrate conformity with the new safety technical requirements, which affects type testing, technical documentation and certification workflows. Suppliers should review existing door handle designs, validation data and labelling against the published text and align their CCC certification planning with the transition period. Because the standard addresses a component that is increasingly integrated with electronic and concealed handle systems, coordination between vehicle manufacturers and tier-one suppliers will be important. Further regulatory information may be available through the company’s news and certification resources.
