China Advances EV Battery Swap and Solid-State Battery Standards

June 2026China is advancing its electric vehicle regulatory framework with several new national standardization projects covering battery swap systems and solid-state batteries for electric vehicles. These initiatives, led by the Standardization Administration of China and administered through the National Technical Committee of Auto Standardization (TC114), reflect ongoing efforts to support the development of next-generation battery technologies and improve interoperability across the electric vehicle sector. Electric vehicle battery standards remain a key component of market access and product compliance requirements in China. Electric vehicles and battery systems usually require CCC certification or battery registration in order to be approved for import and sale in China.
New Compatibility Testing Requirements for Battery Swap Systems
One of the newly approved national standard projects, “Compatibility Test Specifications of Battery Swap for Electric Vehicle and Swappable Battery System” (Plan No. 20262331-T-339), entered the drafting stage on April 28, 2026. The standard is expected to establish technical testing methods for evaluating compatibility between electric vehicles, battery swap stations, and swappable battery systems.
The project is being developed by a consortium of leading industry stakeholders, including CATL, China Automotive Technology and Research Center (CATARC), BAIC Foton, and several battery swap technology providers. The standard builds upon existing regional and industry specifications addressing battery swap interoperability, communication interfaces, and battery pack compatibility.
The proposed requirements are expected to support greater standardization across battery swap networks, helping manufacturers improve interoperability between vehicles and battery systems. As battery swapping gains traction in commercial vehicle and passenger vehicle applications, unified testing criteria may contribute to more efficient deployment of battery swap infrastructure throughout China.
Solid-State Battery Standards Move into Development Phase
China has also initiated the development of two important standards within a broader series for electric vehicle solid-state batteries. The first project, “Solid-State Battery for Electric Vehicle — Part 2: Performance Specification” (Plan No. 20262376-T-339), will establish performance-related requirements and evaluation criteria for solid-state battery technologies. The second project, “Solid-State Battery for Electric Vehicle — Part 4: Life Specification” (Plan No. 20262374-T-339), is intended to define lifecycle and durability requirements.
Both standards are currently in the drafting phase and are being developed by major battery manufacturers and research organizations, including CATL, BYD, Gotion High-Tech, CALB, REPT Battero, and CATARC. The projects complement related standardization efforts covering terminology, classification, safety requirements, and solid electrolytes for electric vehicle solid-state batteries.
For manufacturers, importers, and technology developers targeting the Chinese market, these emerging standards signal increasing regulatory attention on advanced battery technologies. Once finalized, the specifications are expected to provide a more comprehensive framework for evaluating battery performance, service life, and interoperability, supporting the safe commercialization and broader adoption of electric vehicle battery innovations in China.
