Geely continues to pursue methanol-powered vehicles

Chairman Li Shufu made the announcement in mid-June at an industry conference in Chongqing, China. Zhejiang-based Geely Group, among a manageable number of other manufacturers, is developing methanol-powered vehicles. The company is currently testing methanol taxis in some cities in western China and is working on methanol trucks at its commercial vehicle division. Chairman Li said Geely has invested in Icelandic company Carbon Recycling International, which is researching methods to produce methanol from carbon dioxide. Increased investments indicate growing need for manufacture and import of components and equipment, of which many need mandatory CCC certification. Geely Group, which acquired Volvo Cars and owns a 9.7 percent stake in Daimler AG, hopes the investment will reduce its CO2 emissions.

Fuel from methanol could further increase China’s independence in energy sources. The country has large coal deposits that can be converted into methanol. Li also expects methanol-powered vehicles to emit fewer emissions than gasoline or diesel vehicles. Therefore, Geely will continue to expand production of methanol-powered vehicles. CRI, an offshoot of Geely, is planning the world’s largest low-CO2-emission methanol plant in Henan. The plant’s annual capacity is expected to be 110,000 tons.

The oil drilling company with the highest investment now comes from China

China’s largest oil drilling company, PetroChina Co. is going on the offensive and plans to invest $37 billion, as the reports predict the demand for crude oil to remain stable this year. The company made the announcement in mid-March when it presented its annual results. This puts PetroChina ahead of other major global oil companies in terms of investment, such as Saudi Aramco Oil Co, Exxon Mobil Corp and Royal Dutch Shell Plc, which have scaled back investment due to the fallout from the coronavirus pandemic. Oil industry related growth will lead to increased import and manufacture of relevant equipment and machinery that operate at high pressure. For these, a so-called SELO license is required in China. The license is issued by the Chinese authority SELO – China Special Equipment Licensing Office. Like the CSEI, this authority is subordinate to the state market regulator SAMR.

The relative rapid recovery of China and its economy from the effects of the pandemic means higher demand for oil and gas. Energy security remains a high priority for President Xi Jinping. In February, the government already called for an increase in coal, oil and gas output over the next five years. However, that contrasts with leader Xi’s long-term plan for shifting the economy away from fossil fuels.

China’s demand for crude oil has already peaked, now surpassed only by refined products, and will decline over the next decade, Duan Liangwei, PetroChina’s outgoing president, said at a video conference. Nevertheless, the demand for natural gas, one of the comparatively clean fossil fuels, will continue to grow in China. Therefore, PetroChina will focus on upstream steps of natural gas production in the future.

Are you interested in SELO licensing for the Chinese market? MPR China Certification GmbH can provide you with SELO licensing services.

SELO regulations on the safety of special equipment came into effect in 2014 and require domestic and foreign manufacturers to obtain a SELO license in order to sell their products in China. The SELO license is also called China Manufacture License (CML), China Stamp or pressure vessel license.

Visit Us Online at the SIAT 2021 Automotive Trade Fair

The SIAT international trade fair, organised by the Indian Automobile Regulatory Authority (ARAI), will take place virtually online for the first time. Since 1985, SIAT (Symposium on International Automotive Technology) has been an important forum for the automotive market in India. From September 29 to October 1, 2021 renowned representatives of the automotive industry worldwide will come together with this year’s focus theme “Redefining Mobility” to advance the development of the industry through brainstorming and discussions.

In addition to the numerous digital exhibition stalls, a multifaceted programme invites visitors to exchange ideas. Exciting discussion panels on mobility and a wide variety of interesting online lectures form the supporting programme for numerous exhibitions by international manufacturers. The focus of the fair will be on automotive products such as lights, tyres, rims and safety glass. Other topics will include electric power trains and alternative fuels.

The keynote speech by our Managing Director Julian Busch is a special highlight. He will give a comprehensive overview of the relevant certifications for automotive products, Indian quality standard requirements and challenges that manufacturers face during the current global situation. Mr. Busch will then make himself available for further questions on these topics.

State-of-the-art trade fair technology makes it possible for discussion forums and one-on-one meetings to be held in parallel. MPR International and its team will also be present with its own virtual exhibition booth and will be happy to address your individual questions.

Regardless of whether you already have your sights set on the Indian market or simply want to find out about the possibilities – at the trade fair we will advise you personally via video chat. Alibaba develops self-driving trucks through its logistics arm Cainiao

The long-haul transport vehicles will complement robots already in development for parcel delivery. Alibaba CTO Cheng Li made the announcement at the 2021 Global Smart Logistics Summit, media group Caixin reports. Alibaba’s announcement suggests industry competition to use autonomous driving assistants in commercial vehicles. Until now, trucks have been neglected in the development and deployment of driverless systems because they typically travel at slower speeds and operate in less complex driving conditions, such as on highways. Also, due to the relatively small number of commercial vehicles sold compared to passenger cars, many manufacturers are reluctant to pursue further development in this area due to a lack of economic viability. Vehicles and components must receive a CCC certificate in order for the products to be exported to China or to be manufactured locally.

Although Alibaba’s announcement does not provide further details, the logistics company Cainiao announced that it will deploy around 1,000 “Xiaomanlü” logistics robots in university campuses and residential areas from next year. Xiaomanlü, which translates to “hard-working donkey,” was unveiled by Alibaba last September for operation at Cainiao. It will be used for the last mile of delivery services. According to Alibaba, the robot has a self-learning and high-resolution navigation system that can independently plan routes, detect obstacles and pedestrians, and remain functional even without a GPS signal.

In addition to Alibaba, JD.com and Meituan are also testing their robot delivery services in the delivery sector. Last month, the two companies received permission to test their driverless delivery vehicles on designated public roads in Beijing. There, the local government has enacted certain rules to promote this promising technology.

CCC certification is a complex project that requires professional supervision at all stages. For several years MPR China Certification GmbH has been entrusted with large CCC projects for the vehicle manufacturers Lotus, Tesla and Bugatti. We will gladly advise you on the scope and requirements of a China CCC certification without obligation.
